Medicare Advantage Plans 2027: What Changes to Watch Before Enrollment

Choosing a Medicare plan is not something to rush. Medicare Advantage plans 2027 may look similar on the surface, but small changes in costs, doctors, drug coverage, and extra benefits can affect your care all year. Before you enroll, take time to compare the real details, not just the monthly premium.

1. Watch for Changes in Plan Ratings

Medicare uses Star Ratings to help people compare plan quality. For 2027, CMS finalized changes to the Medicare Advantage and Part D Star Ratings system, including removing some measures and focusing more on care, outcomes, patient experience, and access.

This matters because a plan with a strong rating may offer better service, better care coordination, or fewer member complaints. But do not choose by stars alone. A highly rated plan is not helpful if your doctor, hospital, or medicine is not covered well.

2. Review Prescription Drug Costs Closely

Many Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage. For 2027 and beyond, CMS is codifying Part D changes linked to the Inflation Reduction Act, including the end of the coverage gap phase and lower out-of-pocket exposure for covered drugs.

Still, your actual cost depends on your plan’s formulary, pharmacy network, drug tier, and prior authorization rules. Before enrollment, list every medicine you take and compare each plan using that list.

3. Check Doctor and Hospital Networks

A low-cost plan can become expensive if your favorite doctor is out of network. Medicare Advantage plans often use HMO or PPO networks, so access can change from one year to the next.

Before joining, call your doctor’s office and ask: “Will you accept this exact plan in 2027?” Also check hospitals, specialists, labs, and therapy providers. Do not rely only on last year’s information.

4. Look Beyond Extra Benefits

Dental, vision, hearing, fitness, transportation, and over-the-counter allowances can be useful. But extra benefits should not hide the basics. CMS is also tightening rules around some special supplemental benefits and plan debit cards, including clearer eligibility criteria and stronger checks at the point of sale.

Ask what the benefit really covers. A dental benefit may sound large, but it may have limits, waiting rules, or a small provider network.

5. Mark the Enrollment Dates

For 2027 coverage, Medicare says Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, 2026. During this time, you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage plan, and coverage starts January 1 if the plan gets your request by December 7.

Medicare also notes that people already in a Medicare Advantage plan can use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31 to switch plans or return to Original Medicare.

Final Thoughts

The best 2027 plan is not always the one with the lowest premium. It is the one that fits your doctors, medicines, health needs, and budget. Read the Annual Notice of Change, compare plans side by side, and ask questions before you enroll. A careful review now can help you avoid surprise costs later.
